Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal with Combat Distinguishing Device

NAMHeroic achievement while serving as vehicle commander, 1st Mobile Assault Platoon, Weapons Company, 3d Battalion, 3d Marines, Regimental Combat Team-7, I Marine Expeditionary Force forward, on 22 April 2006, in support of Operation IRAQI FREEDOM. On this day, Corporal Flory provided superior leadership and courage during an improvised explosive device attack that claimed the life of a fellow Marine and wounded the section leader and vehicle gunner. With the section leader incapacitated, Corporal Flory decisively took command of the section and simultaneously coordinated air casualty evacuation, vehicle placement, and casualty triage. He calmly and effectively reported to higher as he arranged the remaining vehicles in the section to best optimize security for the casualties and landing zone in preparation for possible enemy forces in the area. Once the aircraft was inbound, he ensured that higher was informed of all vital information and personally escorted each casualty onto the aircraft ensuring their well-being and safety. Corporal Flory’s initiative, perseverance, and total dedication to duty reflected credit upon him and were in keeping with the highest traditions of the Marine Corps and the United States Naval Service.
