The Lost Boys of Bougainville
A little background on this project: last fall I made several visits to the National Archives in Washington DC on behalf of the 3rd Battalion 3rd Marines Memorial Fund. My mission was two-fold: acquire a list of the battalion’s casualties during World War 2 for the planned memorial, and see what kind of reference material was available on 3/3 from World War 2. Our Corpsman emeritus “Doc” Hoppy also thought we might be able to find a few living veterans as well. Read more
A tale of four videos
While doing my initial online research for this site, I stumbled across the YouTube channel of M16musicc, a former India Company Marine who served with 3/3 on the ’04-’05 and ’06 deployments. Going through his videos really helped me collect my thoughts on what I want this site to be: a look at all aspects of the battalion in the War on Terror, not just the ‘sexy’ combat parts. Read more
Geo-Tagging & The News
The British paper The Guardian, recently added an interactive visualization of all their Iraq and Afghanistan stories. Why do we care? Because in the hectic day-to-day schedule of patrols, post, watch, and working parties, it’s easy to lose sight of the big picture. Read more
